The Story Of Panerai

The founder Giovanni Panerai, built his first workshop, shop and school of watch-making in Florence, Italy in 1860. For many decades Panerai supplied the Italian Navy specialist diving corps with precision instruments. Originally created to be used deep underwater, Panerai watches are known for their unparalleled legibility and luminosity in the dark.

In 1997 the brand was acquired by the Richemont Group and launched on the international market. Today Panerai develops and crafts its movements and watches at its Neuchâtel manufacture, combining Italian design flair and history with Swiss horological expertise.

PANERAI FOR THE ROYAL ITALIAN NAVY

With the increasing involvement in underwater operations, the Navy's requirements become even more specific after the Second World War: military watches had to remain underwater in extreme conditions for long periods of time. In 1954, two new references, the Ref.6152 and the Ref. 6154, were tested.

Some of today's models were inspired by them, as they incorporated some innovations designed to make the construction even more solid and resistant: the case is made from a single block with fixed handles, retaining the cushion shape, with more pronounced edges on the sides. They received a general aesthetic revision of the individual parts and adopted a screw-down winding crown, tubular cylindrical replacing the conical cylindrical of the historic Radiomir.

After careful analysis of the tests, some modifications were made and the definitive reference 6152 1 was born, also with reinforced lugs and made from solid steel from the same block as the case.

PANERAI SUSTAINABLE COMMITMENT

Panerai and UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO) are collaborating to develop ocean awareness activities as part of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).

In 2021 Panerai launches The Submersible eLab-ID™, a concept watch with the highest percentage of recycled-based material ever. This watch is a statement of promoting more and more the use of recycled materials and the development of a circular economy to reduce the environmental impact of the watchmaking industry.

Also in 2021, the brand develops Luminor Marina eSteel™, a big step in Panerai’s commitment to reduce the need for virgin material extraction and its associated high environmental impact. 89g of the Luminor Marina eSteel™ components are made of recycled-based materials, corresponding to the 58,4% of the total weight of the watch.
