Jewelry Chain makes time for helping kids fight cancer

Detroit Free Press, 1/9/2011

TODAY'S SUBJECT: Making Time for a Good Cause -- Tapper's Diamonds & Fine Jewelry's new watch battery charity program, which began on Jan. 1. The program tagline is "Because at Tapper's, changing your watch battery can help change a life."

THE CAUSE: Tapper's will be providing complimentary simple watch battery changes in exchange for a suggested minimum donation of $10 to charity per battery (limit of three watches). Every quarter, the charity will change.  Through March 31, donations will go to Kids Kicking Cancer, a charity providing martial arts and guided meditation training to children undergoing cancer treatment.

BACKGROUND: Tapper's, a local, family-owned jeweler in business since 1977, lists community involvement it its mission statement as an important corporate value.  The new watch battery program follows the company's annual Winter Coat Drive, which gathered and distributed more than 2,000 winter coats, hats and gloves to needy children and adults in the Detroit area.

RESULTS: All three Tapper's jewelry stores in West Bloomfield at Orchard Mall, in Novi at Twelve Oaks Mall and in Troy at Somerset Collection are participating in the program. The fund-raising goal per quarter is $4,000.

ON GIVING: "Giving back to the community is our duty as members of society," says Howard Tapper, store owner and president.  "Working together, we can really make a difference in people's lives."
