Marla Tapper Young receives award for community involvement

Tapper's Diamonds & Fine Jewelry is proud to announce that Marla Tapper Young will be honored on Thursday, April 30th with the Emerging Leader Award by Alternatives for Girls (AFG), a non-profit group which assists homeless, high risk and young women avoid violence, teen pregnancy and exploitation. The award will be given as part of AFG's 20th Anniversary Role Model Dinner and Fundraiser, due to take place at the Detroit Westin Book Cadillac Hotel.

A member of Tapper's ownership and Manager of Customer Relations, Marla Tapper Young's contribution to AFG began five years ago when she spearheaded a campaign called "Dress for a Dream," a campaign aimed at helping underprivileged high school girls outfit themselves with a dress and shoes in order to attend their senior prom.

"It was so devastating to me to think that a girl would not attend her prom because she couldn't afford the clothes that would make her look and feel great," says Marla. "I grew up not even thinking about not being able to do this or that because of cost. I'm very lucky, and I feel that it's my responsibility to help others in any way that I can."

"Dress for a Dream," which collected more than 3,500 prom dresses, was only the beginning of Marla's involvement with AFG, which has included fundraising, serving on AFG's Chances for Choices Raffle planning committee and AFG's Women's Advisory Group over the past five years.

Part of Marla's inspiration behind her leadership role at AFG is her family's commitment to community involvement. As individuals and as a company, the Tapper family has volunteered, fundraised and fulfilled leadership roles in a myriad of community organizations for decades.

"I am so proud that community involvement is part of Tapper's core values," Marla emphasizes. "My family has raised me to understand that running a business in a vacuum is not an option. We are all part of a local, national and global community and as human beings, we are all responsible for one another."
