Tapper's Exceptionally Beautiful Diamonds with a large diamond refracting light
A FAMILY JEWELRY STORE
In 1977, Howard Tapper found the location for what would be his first store in Southfield, Michigan. He sketched the design on the back of a napkin and withdrew his life savings. But it wasn’t enough. He turned to friends and family, but he was still short. He had one more prized possession that he could sell: the Cutlass. While it was the first new car he and his wife bought as a couple, it had to go.

Hours of work went into renovating the store to make it beautiful. With no funds on-hand to pay a staff, Howard Tapper called on family. With his wife Susan and mother-in-law Trudy by his side, Howard opened Tapper’s Jewelry on May 7, 1977. A few months later, his brother and sister, Steven and Barbara Tapper, joined him and from there, the rest is history. At Tapper’s, we all have a story to share. Tell us your story.

Understanding the Rap Report

The Rapaport Diamond Report was created to estimate diamond prices and is used as a guideline only. These prices may be substantially higher or, in some rare cases, lower than the actual market value of a diamond. When the Rap Report is used as a selling tool, it depicts wholesale pricing, which can be misleading and lead to paying a premium price.

Regardless of Rapaport pricing, Tapper’s is confident that we provide the most competitive prices, which is why we continue to offer Tapper’s 110% Best Diamond Price Guarantee***. Please ask if you would like us to further explain the Rap Report.

THE FOUR C's
CLARITY

The clarity of a diamond is determined by the size, nature, position, relief, and quantity of internal characteristics (inclusions), which occur naturally inside of a diamond. Every diamond is unique.

Diamonds are graded under 10x magnification. Most inclusions are not visible to the naked eye.

Two diamonds with the same clarity grade can vary in light performance depending on the placement of the inclusions and the proportions of the diamond.

Color

Many people think of gem quality diamonds as colorless, however, truly colorless diamonds are very rare. Most diamonds that are used for fine jewelry are near colorless. GIA’s D-to-Z diamond color-grading system measures the degree of colorlessness by comparing a stone under controlled lighting and precise viewing conditions to masterstones of established color value. [ SOURCE: WWW.GIA.EDU]

Carat

Carat is a unit that measures a diamond’s weight, not size. Two diamonds might have the same carat weight but one may appear larger because of its proportions.

EXAMPLE: Two people who weigh the same amount but have a twelve inch height difference will not
appear the same. The person who is shorter will appear much different than the taller person due to
the way their weight is distributed.

Cut

Cut is often mistaken for shape, but cut actually describes the proportions of a diamond.

Cut grade measures a diamond’s brightness, fire, and scintillation. If a diamond is cut too shallow or too deep it will not maximize light return or sparkle.

Color, clarity, and carat weight are determined by mother nature. Cut is the only characteristic determined by man to maximize light refraction
and beauty.

Up to 50% of the value of a diamond is in its cut. Tapper’s specializes in diamonds with Excellent
and Very Good cut grades.

BEAUTY & LIGHT Performance
WHY IS A TAPPER’S DIAMOND MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN THE REST?

Most jewelers and laboratories measure a diamond’s beauty by its outer proportions (cut grades). At Tapper’s, we go one step further to offer the world’s most beautiful diamonds by measuring light performance.

Why light performance matters

Light Performance measures how much a diamond reflects, refracts, and releases its inner beauty. It is determined by how well a diamond interacts with light, it’s light return, fire, scintillation, and optical symmetry. Tapper’s uses cutting-edge light performance technology to capture and record each individual diamond’s light performance. While clarity, cut, color,
and carat weight define the rarity of each diamond, light performance is the most accurate and comprehensive way to measure sparkle and beauty.

DIAMOND FLUORESCENCE
What is diamond fluorescence?

Diamond fluorescence, in its most simple form,
is the effect that ultraviolet (UV) light has on a diamond. When you stand under a blue light or ultraviolet light, sometimes you can see your whites get brighter or your teeth appear to glow.

This is the same effect the diamond has under the UV rays. On a GIA Diamond Grading Report, fluorescence refers to the strength, or intensity, of the diamond’s reaction to long-wave UV, which is an essential component of daylight. The light emitted lasts as long as the diamond is exposed to the ultraviolet source. GIA studies show that for the overwhelming majority of diamonds, the strength of fluorescence has no widely noticeable effect on appearance.

In the GIA Fluorescence Study, it was found that the average person could not make a distinction between a diamond with fluorescence and a diamond without. In many instances, observers prefer the appearance of diamonds that have medium to strong fluorescence. In rare cases, some diamonds with extremely strong fluorescence may appear hazy or oily; fewer than 0.2% of the fluorescent diamonds submitted to GIA exhibit this effect.

SELECTION

Lab grown diamonds are available at Tapper’s and come in a wide range of shapes and sizes.

WHAT ARE LAB GROWN DIAMONDS

Just like natural diamonds, lab grown diamonds are crystallized carbon. The major differences are how they are formed and how rare they are. While natural diamonds are formed over billions of years deep within the earth’s crust, lab grown diamonds are created using a technological process that duplicates the conditions inside the earth.

Lab grown diamonds consist of carbon atoms arranged in the same crystal structure as natural diamonds. Because they are made of the same material as natural diamonds, they exhibit the same physical chemical and optical properties. Using this technology, Tapper’s offers beautiful diamonds with the same sparkle and clarity as natural diamonds.

LAB GROWN Diamonds vs. Diamond Simulants
It is important to note the major distinction between lab grown diamonds and diamond simulants. Lab grown diamonds are not diamond simulants. Diamond simulants, such as cubic zirconia and moissanite, look similar to diamonds but are not true carbon crystals.

Simulants can be distinguished from natural or lab grown diamonds using only the naked eye. They do not have the same chemical or physical properties as natural diamonds and are significantly less durable.
Image
LAB GROWN Diamonds vs. Natural Diamonds

Lab grown diamonds exhibit the same fire, scintillation, and sparkle as natural diamonds, and it’s nearly impossible to differentiate between them, even when looking through a jewelers loupe.

Tapper’s Diamond Lab uses specialized equipment to distinguish between a natural and lab grown diamond. Both diamonds often come with a lab report that identifies them as either natural or lab grown and includes third-party evaluation of clarity, color, carat and cut.

While Natural diamonds have a greater residual value, the price of lab grown diamond may fluctuate overtime due to advancements in technology. These fluctuations can impact the market value of lab grown diamonds.

FANCY COLOR DIAMONDS
THE NATURE OF FANCY COLOR DIAMONDS

Tapper’s specializes in unique and rare fancy color diamonds. Our expertise for analyzing a natural color diamond to bring out its true color potential is a masterful skill resulting in decades of dedication, investment, education, and experience. We will help you find the perfect diamond and design the most exquisite piece.

Diamonds that fall off the D to Z color scale are called fancy color diamonds and exist in almost every color imaginable. While cut is the most critical factor in colorless diamonds, color is the most crucial aspect in fancy color diamonds. Hue, tone, and saturation constitute the three components of color
Unlike colorless diamonds, fancy color diamonds are not cut to maximize brilliance and sparkle.
They are cut to achieve the best color possible.
